Geek-Tweak:
- Pick your level of geekdom (in house/3rd party/custom)
- For in-house, I like wordpress, you can install it on just about any PHP/MySQL based system, but I'm sure it works best with Apache (most open source/free web applications do)
- For 3rd part, or online service, I like blogger.com, which I think has been purchased by Google (probably a while back)
- If you are thinking custom, your knowledge probably exceeds mine, but feel free to listen and point out where I'm wrong at The Geekons Forums!
- For blogger.com, just sign up for a free account, and start blogging!
- You can also have blogger.com FTP the files over to your own website, so you can use your own URL, like blog.woventhorns.com
- If you don't have your own site, you can use blogger.com's default site, like I did with our sample blog over at geekons.blogspot.com
- You can also have blogger.com send over an XML feed of your blog which allows people to “subscribe” to your blog in their favorite news aggregator, web application, firefox extension, or even desktop widget! (or when you browse the geekons blog in firefox, you can add a live bookmark that will be updated regularly as the blog gets updated.)
- Most blogs allow you to bring in photos and videos, which are great for missionaries!
- You don't even have to have your own website or pay for hosting when you go with a solution like blogger.com!
- Now, the important part of blogging:
- Write good content!
- Find a topic you are passionate about, and start writing about it!
- You can even simply write your opinions or feelings, but it is best to back things up. For a ministry, including scripture references is a must!
- Use it to keep your congreation up-to-date on where your missionaries are, what they are doing, and the type of impact they are having. (as well as how to help them out.)
View-Source: The King is back, and is letting you have it your way
- 1 Samuel 8
- Samuel was the last in a long line of God-fearing judges that ruled Israel under God's command
- Samuel's sons were taking advantage of the people
- The people decided they wanted a king, like all of the other lands around them.
- It is easy to let the world influence us and make us think that God's way is not the best way, but we need to trust God, knowing that he has the best plan for our lives.
- Samuel did not agree with them, and discussed the people's idea with the Lord, and God agreed to let them have a king, but instructed Samuel to tell the people that while He would allow them to have their own way, they would not be as well off as if God were in control.
- God's plan is the perfect plan, and we need to remember that each day as we head out and hear the lies the enemy spreads about the way the real world works. When in reality, God created the real world, and knows exactly what is best for us, despite what TV, the news, and our friends tell us.
- Following God always leads to the right path, and we need to keep on our guard to avoid the common pitfalls that lead us to place something higher than God, such as computers, sports, hobbies, money, etc.
