Pop-Up: PuTTY

5 Stars

  • PuTTY is an SSH and Telenet client for Windows
  • PuTTY basically allows you to have command-line access to all of your SSH enabled Linux and OS X boxes from your Windows PC.
  • The full PuTTY suite also comes with tools for doing just about anything over SSH.
  • Various tools include:
    • Plink - to perform SSH communication from within other software
    • PSCP - to copy files to and from SSH-enabled servers
    • PSFTP - to copy files to and from SFTP servers
    • PuTTYgen - to create PuTTY formatted Keys?
    • Pageant - to run PuTTY as a service
  • I use this software daily to remote into a Linux server that runs my IRC client, and I used to use it to remote into webservers for upgradign and maintaining software packages.
  • 5 out of 5 stars, Still the best SSH client for Windows and it is free and Open Source.

Geek-Tweak: How to make a 3D model of a 2D logo

  • Vector logos rock... you already knew that.
  • You went vector because it scales, it is clean, and you can even cut out vinyl decals for promotional purposes.
  • After listening to this, you'll also know how to make a 3D model of that 2D logo!
  • First, you'll need a 2D vector logo in SVG format. (Check out Episode 1 if you need a good SVG editor, because Inkscape is just about the best out there.)
  • Now, you'll need Blender, which we reviewed in episode 17.
  • Fire up Blender and delete the default cube.
  • Click on File>Import>Paths
  • Select Inkscape SVG (or whatever other path-based file you'd like to load... but I only have experience with Inkscape SVG)
  • Browse to the SVG file you'd like, and middle click/double click on the file you'd like to open.
  • Just click OK when a confusing dialog box comes up asking you weird questions.
  • Now just go to the Editing controls (F9), select the imported logo, and increase the extrude!
  • If you notice that you only have an outline and not a solid object, you may need to find "open" vertices next to each other, select each of them using the right mouse button to select the first, and control + right mouse button to select the next, then just press "c" to close it. (it should look solid as soon as you get them all closed.
  • Now just play with surfaces, reflections, and rendering and you're all done!

View-Source: Advice for Joel #4

  • Psalm 34:14 tells us to Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
  • Go away from evil, but then do good... go after peace and pursue it...
  • Definitely a very clear verse, but it has some interesting concepts:
    • Strive actively to do good
    • Evaluate the things you do, basing their good or evil status on God's standard, not our own.
    • Find the things in God's word that describe peace and define things you can do to pursue God's peace.
    • Actually do those things you've defined as good or peaceful.
