Geek-Tweak: Making use of RSS Feeds

  • RSS = Really Simple Syndication
  • An RSS feed is a text file that lists links to content and sometimes to the content itself.
  • Many ministries already have RSS feeds simply by using blogging software or websites.
  • By using RSS feeds, members of your congregation can subscribe to your content, and see changes on various devices.
  • There is software for almost every system out there:
    • Google Reader - web based (works on all modern browsers, including the iPod Touch and iPhone)
    • Net News Wire - OS X and iPhone/iPod Touch
    • Feed Demon - Windows version of Net News Wire
    • Firefox live bookmarks - OS X/Windows/Linux
    • Outlook - Windows
    • OS X Screen Saver
    • iTunes - OS X/Windows/Linux (for MP3 RSS feeds - podcasts)
    • tons of freebie apps
  • If you subscribe to this podcast, you are subscribing to an RSS feed that links to MP3's.
  • You can subscribe in Firefox by clicking on the orange RSS icon in the address bar of any site that has a proper RSS feed.
  • Once you subscribe to a feed in Firefox as a Live Bookmark, you will see what looks like a folder containing multiple links. Those links will change on a regular basis as the website changes that is hosting the RSS feed.
  • Using RSS feeds can be a great alternative to snail-mail newsletters and forcing people to visit your website every day to check for changes.
  • RSS feeds are also a way to bring people back to your website once they find content they would like more information on.

View-Source: Advice for Joel #7

  • Love and Faithfulness are two key elements to everyone's life.
  • God tells us if we love Him, we will obey Him
  • He also tells us that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, and mind, and the second greatest commandment is to love our neighbour as ourselves.
  • This attitude of love is what should set us apart from the rest of the world, and reflect God best.
  • We also need faithfulness, because without faith in God and His word, then our love means nothing.
  • Our faith in Jesus Christ, the Word become flesh, is the key to our relationship with God.
  • Both of these elements are required to understand, know, and accept Jesus Christ and the work He did on the cross.
